One day Clota came upon this new creature in his
wanderings. He saw that the beast could speak and reason, a trait never before gifted to any but the Elders. Clota became enraged and slew the man where he stood, and flew to find Esus. Do you not know what you have created? demanded Clota. Esus tried to reason with him on the merits of man, but Clota would hear none of it. Men are my greatest work! he reasoned. They will bring us more glory than ever
before. At this Clota grew the more enraged, and flames leapt from his body. Are they not mere beasts, and we the mighty Elders? The beasts of the earth deserve no place among us. Clota sped away to Dagda to report what he had learned. Dagda ordered the first council of the Elders to determine the fate of men.

Now before the council was convened, Clota met with Anu and poisoned his mind against men. Anu was the weakest of the Elders and wished to remain in Clotas good graces, so he also came to hate men. Clota told him that if men were to remain on the earth, they would challenge his ownership of the land and the plants that he had created. Jealousy seized his heart.
